The Fascinating area of Stavros,
this beautiful, sun-bathed seaside resort has been in the limelight
since the ancient times. According to ancient writers' sources
and through historic evidence, there was an ancient migdonian
settlement here, that is, a market town and a base, of operations,
known as "Vormiskos" according to "Stephanos
Byzantius" or "Vromiskos" according to Thucydldes.
This was at the banks of the river "Rihios". Here
according to what historians believe, the ancient poet Euripides
met tragic death as he was torn to pieces by Archaelaos' wild
dogs during royal hunting. The importance of this arises from
the fact that it participated in the Attic-Dilian alliance with
many other remarkable migdonian towns and also the fact that
this area was approached by the troops of the Lacedaemonian
general "Vrasidas" and the army of king Xerxes. During
the Byzantine period it became a strategic function as it was
near "Egnatia" Street and a lot of travelers passed
by on their way to "Agion Oros".
